Iceland spar, also known as Clear Calcite, is a type of calcite that was first discovered in Iceland. This mineral exhibits double refraction, which means that objects viewed through it appear as if they have two images. This variety of calcite is typically completely transparent with internal rainbow inclusions. Iceland spar was first reported by J.D. Dana in 1837, but its history can be traced back even further. It is believed that the Vikings used this mineral as a navigation aid because of its polarizing ability, allowing them to find the sun regardless of weather conditions. Historians believe that the “sunstone” mentioned in medieval Icelandic texts is actually Iceland spar, further evidenced by its discovery in the buried cargo of the Alderney shipwreck of 1592.
